So, you are going to get your car insurance policy to protect you and your car. But did you know there are additional benefits you can add on to give you and your vehicle an extra protection?

Here's a breakdown of some of the 10 most popular car insurance additional benefits as chosen by Generali Malaysia’s online car insurance customers. We want to help you make an informed decision on what coverage you might need and decide whether they are worth the extra cost to your car insurance premium.

1. Windscreen, Window or Sunroof Breakage - Have you ever been driving somewhere when suddenly, a pebble smashed into your windscreen, leaving a terrible crack?

You won't have to worry about the expense of repairs or replacements because this policy add-on protects against damage to your car's front and rear windshields, all windows, and sunroof glass, even if it cracks or gets chipped. However, the cost of Windscreen coverage varies depending on current market price as well as the car model year and make.

2. Special Perils – Special perils coverage refers to damages to your car due to floods, fallen trees, landslides, storm, earthquakes, and other convulsions of nature. If any of these natural events damage your car, this add-on benefit has got your back.

With the current climate crisis and unpredictable weather in this country, special perils have become one of the most popular added benefits to the standard car insurance policy, after all it is better to be safe than sorry.

3 & 4. Multi Drive Bravo / Bravo Plus - Considering adding young drivers with less driving experience? Add-ons like Multi Drive Bravo or Multi Drive Bravo Plus can eliminate the compulsory excess fee typically applied to young, inexperienced drivers, commonly faced by drivers under 21 with a probationary (P) or learner's (L) license. The compulsory excess amount is usually a fixed RM400 that you, the policyholder, would be responsible for if an unnamed driver damages your vehicle.

The coverage difference between Multi Drive Bravo and Multi Drive Bravo Plus can be viewed in the following table:

5. Legal Liability of Passengers (LLOP) - This coverage provides protection if a passenger in your car is found to be legally liable for an accident or caused damages to a third party. It can help cover the costs of damages or injuries to other parties involved.

For example, a passenger in your car may have hurt a pedestrian or a motorist by opening the car door and injuring that person. If the wounded person, who is now designated a third party, decides to sue you and your friend, this new coverage will cover your losses and you will not have to pay from your own pocket.

In addition, the Singapore government has made it mandatory for Malaysian vehicles to have LLOP added to their car insurance policy if they are planning to enter the country by car.

6. Legal Liability to Passengers (LLTP) - If you are at fault for an injury or death to a passenger while driving your vehicle, this coverage could help you cover the medical expenses or lost income to your passenger. This particular benefit is also intended to safeguard you in the event of legal liabilities brought by your passengers.

This situation might sound extreme, but in the event you had friends or acquaintances in your vehicle and were involved in an accident due to your own negligence, if the victims sue you and you do not have Legal Liabilities to Passengers coverage, you will have to cover that expense out of your own pocket.

Another thing to note is that Legal Liability to Passengers (LLTP) is also a mandatory coverage like the LLOP coverage if you plan to enter Singapore by car.

7. Additional Named Driver - If you are a first-time car owner in Malaysia, adding an Additional Named Driver to your policy means you can specifically choose who's covered to drive your car at RM20 per registered named driver. Unlike an All-Drivers benefit, you can customize your policy and potentially save more on your premiums.

8. Current Year NCD Relief - You know that discount you get for not making any claims on your car insurance policy. With this add-on, it means you can keep your current NCD to your next car insurance renewal period even if you do make a claim. It's like a little reward for being an unlucky careful driver.

9. E-Hailing Extension - This optional add-on to your car insurance policy provides comprehensive coverage specifically for when you're using your vehicle for e-hailing.  It covers loss or damage to your vehicle in case of an accident, regardless of fault, Personal Accident (PA) coverage for the authorized e-hailing driver in case of injury during a ride and ensures legal liability coverage if a passenger is injured during an e-hailing trip.

10. Compensation for Assessed Repair Time (CART) - CART is an optional add-on for your car insurance. It gives you a daily payout while your car gets repaired after an accident, up to a set limit per day and total number of days.

So, there you have it. These extra benefits can give you not only extra peace of mind but also extra protection on the road. Just keep in mind to weigh up the cost versus the benefit before you decide to add them to your policy.
