Remember that article we shared a while back about renewing your car road tax with the MyJPJ app? Well, guess what? The convenience does not stop there! You can now ditch the long queues and renew your driver’s license using the same app – all from the comfort of your home (or anywhere with a smartphone!).

The MyJPJ app is a game-changer, offering a faster, more streamlined way to manage your essential driving documents.

So, how exactly does it work? Buckle up, because we are about to guide you through the hassle-free process of renewing your Malaysian driver's license with MyJPJ app.

Benefits of Using MyJPJ App for Digital Driving License Renewal

Let's face it, time is of the essence. Traditional renewal methods often involve planning a trip to the JPJ office, dealing with crowds, and potentially facing long waiting times. With MyJPJ, you can ditch the hassle and renew your license in a matter of minutes.

Here are some key benefits to consider:

  • Save Time and Skip the Queue: Renewing your license through the app eliminates the need to visit a JPJ office and wait in line. This is a massive time saver, especially for busy individuals.
  • Secure and Convenient Access: Your driver's license details are readily available on your smartphone with MyJPJ app. No more rummaging through drawers or worrying about misplaced documents.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing your driver's license is up-to-date and accessible provides peace of mind while you are on the road.
  • RM5 Rebate for Going Digital: As of April 2024, there is an added incentive! Get RM5 off when you opt for the digital license (e-LMM) during renewal.

How to renew an expiring driving license online using MyJPJ app?

Now that you are convinced about the benefits, let's dive into the actual steps. Here is how you can renew your driver's license using MyJPJ application in a few simple clicks:

Step 1: Login and Access Renewal Feature:

  • Open the MyJPJ app on your smartphone and log in using your existing credentials (username and password). If you have not already, download the app for free from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or Huawei AppGallery.
  • Once logged in, navigate to the "Driver's License" or "Lesen Memandu" section within the app. This might be displayed on the main menu or under a dedicated "Licenses" or "Documentation" tab.
  • Locate the "Renewal" or "Pembaharuan" option. This will typically be a clearly labelled button or menu item.

Step 2: Review License Details and Choose Renewal Option:

The app will display your current driver's license information. Double check these details to ensure everything is accurate.

You will now be presented with two renewal options:

  • Digital License Only (e-LMM): This option renews your license electronically. Your digital license will be accessible within the MyJPJ app for police verification during traffic stops. (Do not forget, this option qualifies you for the RM5 rebate!)
  • Digital & Physical License: This option renews both your digital license (e-LMM) and sends you a physical copy via mail.

We recommend considering the RM5 rebate and the growing adoption of digital licenses by enforcement personnel. However, the choice is ultimately yours!

Step 3: Payment and Confirmation:

Once you have chosen your preferred renewal option, it is time to settle the payment. MyJPJ mobile app offers a variety of secure payment methods, including credit or debit cards, e-wallets like Touch 'n Go or Boost, and online banking options.

Carefully review the renewal summary to ensure all details, including the chosen license format and fees, are correct.

Proceed with the payment using your chosen method. The app will guide you through the secure payment process.

Upon successful payment, you will receive a confirmation notification within the app.

Digital vs. Physical Driving License: Weighing the Pros and Cons

The introduction of digital driver's licenses (e-LMM) offers a modern and convenient alternative. However, some Malaysians might still prefer the traditional physical license although it has been widely used in some countries in this and other regions. But is a DDL right for you? Let's weigh the pros and cons of both options.

A comparison table on the pros and cons of digital driving license versus physical driving license in terms of convenience, security, accessibility and international travel.

Other Considerations:

Privacy: Some people may be concerned about the potential for DDLs to be tracked or monitored.

Environmental Impact: DDLs eliminate the need for plastic card production.

Ultimately, the choice between a digital and physical driver's license depends on your individual needs and priorities.  If you value convenience and security and primarily drive domestically, a DDL might be a good option. However, if you travel internationally or prefer a tried-and-true method, a physical license is still the way to go. But.. having both will give you the best of both worlds!

The Future of Driver's Licenses

As DDL technology continues to develop and gain wider acceptance, it may eventually become the standard.  However, for the foreseeable future, both digital and physical licenses are likely to stay.
